IIT at least discontinued the contoversial staff quota. But over the last two decades, till date, the Birla Institute of Technology and Science – BITS Pilani also has its quota under Direct Admissions for not only BITS Staff children but also for children of Birla Education Trust which runs various schools in Pilani and also for toppers of various Birla Schools in Pilani. The quota kids are not even required to take BITSAT the famous online exam of BITS for doing admissions by merit. In December 2009, one of the Pilani Birla Schools had an advertsiement stating “Sizeable Number of Seats under Management Quota for Admission to state of the art BITS Pilani” as Catch Line to attract students to enroll in the Pilani school. All those who are who is who in BITS administration in its Pilani, Dubai, Goa and Hyderabad campuses are all beneficiaries of this quota. There are people who became faculty at BITS and as school teacher just to avail the quota of BITS.In the Merit vs Quota debate, Indian Express Dated Nov 01, 2006 says that Prof Maheshwari, Vice Chancellor BITS Pilani had said: “We are for Merit and not for any Quota. The view is representative of the teachers and students of the institute. We pride ourselves on excellence and cannot let anything undermine it. Even my children can’t enter this institution, if they don’t qualify the entrance exam.” Its a fact that BITS Staff children get admission to Group B MSc (Hons)programs under staff quota and are allowed to do dual degree in Group C programs which include premium Information Systems degree. Those who cannot get in Group B in staff quota get into Group C General Studies. Not bad that IIT KGP during 1998 to 2005 admitted just about a 100 staff kids under the secret quota as compared to BITS Pilani whose Staff quota – Pilani schools quota direct admissions in last two decades would be over 600 till this year. Thats indeed a top ranking performance for an institution whose vice chancellor had said in public that even his children cannot enter BITS Pilani if they don’t qualify in the path breaking BITSAT.
